Database Support for Taxonomy

چکیده
Taxonomists classify the organisms they study in order to refer to, identify and understand them. However, the same organism may at times be classified according to different taxonomic opinions and subsequently have several alternative names or be placed in different taxa. As alternative classifications multiply, biologists are commonly faced with the need to compare and contrast taxonomies in order to identify how they differ in their organisation. Thus there is a pressing need for computer systems that are capable of handling multiple taxonomies arising from the combination of legacy data, newly described taxa, modern revisions and conflicting opinions. Many database systems have been built to handle taxonomic data. We review taxonomic databases and show that they do not provide taxonomists with the necessary tools to support their work. A new model of taxonomy (the Prometheus Model) is defined in [PK99], and we now compare existing database technology to our requirements and show their strengths and weaknesses.

The Prometheus Database for Taxonomy
This paper presents the work carried out in the Prometheus project and its motivation, taxonomy. Taxonomy presents challenges to common database systems. Because of its complexity and the necessary treatments applied to its data, common database models such as the relational, the object-oriented, of even graph models are not able to support taxonomic applications fully. Our approach is the exte...
متن کاملContent-based Retrieval from Unstructured Audio Databases Using an Ecological Acoustics Taxonomy
In this paper we describe a method to search for environmental sounds in unstructured databases with user-submitted material. The goal of the project is to facilitate the design of soundscapes in virtual environments. We analyze the use of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a learning algorithm to classify sounds according to a general sound events taxonomy based on ecological acoustics. In our ...
متن کاملMaintenance of Generalized Association Rules Based on Pre-large Concepts
Due to the increasing use of very large databases and data warehouses, mining useful information and helpful knowledge from transactions is evolving into an important research area. In the past, researchers usually assumed databases were static and items were on a single level to simplify data mining problems. Thus, most of algorithms proposed focused on a single level, and did not utilize prev...
متن کاملA Taxonomy of Data Quality Problems
In today’s society the exploration of one or more databases to extract information or knowledge to support management is a critical success factor for an organization. However, it is well known that several problems can affect data quality. These problems have a negative effect in the results extracted from data, influencing their correction and validity. In this context, it is quite important ...
متن کاملTHE TAXONOMY WORKBENCH A multimedia database system for analysing representational modalities
Work started by addressing the first part of the research agenda of modality theory, i.e. the development of a taxonomy of output modalities in the media of graphics, sound and touch. A (representational) modality is a way of representing information. It was realised from early on that work might benefit from the support of a software tool in which we could represent large numbers of samples of...
